Using SpamAssassin to Block Spam

The topic of this article is supported in its entirety by our customer support department.

Every one of our cPanel hosting plans is packaged with SpamAssassin in order to keep spam out of your inbox. SpamAssassin uses a wide variety of local and network tests to identify spam signatures. This makes it harder for spammers to identify one aspect which they can craft their messages to work around.

In order to manage your installation of SpamAssassin:

1. Log into your cPanel by navigating to your customer manager at https://my.opensourcehost.com then clicking “My Products” from the navigation in the top right and then “Control Panel” next to the server you wish to manage.
2. Once on your cPanel Home Page click on the “SpamAssassin” icon.
3. Be sure that SpamAssassin is enabled.

On the SpamAssassin home screen you’ll see controls for disabling and enabling SpamAssassin as well as options for enabling the “Auto-Delete” feature to remove email from the server as it is recognized as spam, setting the spam score threshold, enabling a folder for your recognized spam email to be sent to, and a button that will take you to more advanced SpamAssassin settings.

Important Note: Concerning the Spam Score: The adjustable spam score on this screen is a threshold value that an email must reach before it is considered spam. The spam score of an email is based on an industry standard weighted value applied to each email based on different elements the email contains. For example if an email contains hyperlinks, images, or certain known keywords such as “sale” or “buy”, values will be applied to the email raising the spam score. The lower the threshold value is set; the more aggressive your spam filtering will be.

On the Configure SpamAsssassin page, you’ll be able to add email addresses to your White List and Black List. Adding email addresses to the White List will ensure that SpamAssassin does not mark email inbound from the address as spam by subtracting 100 from the email’s spam score. Inversely adding email address to the Black List will raise each inbound email’s spam score by 100.

If you’re still receiving an inordinate amount of spam even after adjusting your SpamAssassin Settings, you may want to look into our premium spam solution Email Defense.
