Return to "Miscellaneous"OpenSourceHost provides a large amount of disk space and bandwidth for use with your web hosting account. Disk space, or disk space quota, is the maximum amount of actual hard disk space that your account contents may use at any one time. Bandwidth, or bandwidth quota, is the amount of data that can be passed in and out of your hosting account in a calendar month. At any time, you can view your disk space and bandwidth usage through your VDS Manager.
The disk space usage for your account includes any file you upload, any file created by a ValueApp that is specific to your account, and any file that is generated or created by software running in your account. System-installed items, such as the Apache web server or a ValueApp such as phpMyAdmin, do not count against your disk quota; however, the Apache log files and any configuration or data files for your ValueApps, or other user-specific files, do count toward the limit.
The bandwidth usage for your account is the amount of data traffic in and out of your account in a calendar month. Each time visitor hits your website and views its contents, or you upload a file (or any other traffic-generating actions), bandwidth is used. OpenSourceHost provides enough bandwidth that you will most likely not need to be concerned about bandwidth usage; however, you will want to always be sure that your pages are well optimized so that disk space and bandwidth are not wasted. For example, keeping large, uncompressed images on your website will use more bandwidth than is needed when your visitors download the files. By compressing your images, the amount of disk space used by the file and the amount of bandwidth used when downloading the file are reduced.
When your account reaches 90% of its total disk space limit, or 90% of the monthly bandwidth usage, you will receive an automatic warning email from our hosting system. This is an indicator that you should investigate the account; remove any un-needed files, inspect the log files and statistics to determine your traffic levels. When the disk space or bandwidth limit is reached, your account services will be temporarily suspended and you will need to purchase additional disk space or bandwidth to reactivate the account services. OpenSourceHost does not automatically bill you for disk space or bandwidth to prevent unwanted overages. Please feel free to contact our customer service department if you have questions about how the disk space and bandwidth quotas work.
