Directing Mail to an External Server with an MX Record

The topic of this article is not supported by our customer support department, however for your convenience we are providing this material to assist you in troubleshooting potential issues related to this topic.

One common DNS change is to point the MX record to an offsite email server. This practice is generally used by companies who host their mail on an in-house server.

To change the MX record, you’ll want to:

Log in to your VDS Manager by clicking the ‘Login to VDS Manager’ link from the Products page of the Customer Manager, which is located at https://my.opensourcehost.com.

Once your in the VDS Manager, click on DNS Records on the left.

Select the checkbox next to the “mail” entry, then click Delete.

Once that is removed you will need to recreate mail.yoursitedomain.com as an Address Record by clicking on Add.

Select Address Record (A Record), and enter mail in the sub domain box and the IP address of your email server in the Network Address box.

Click

This creates mail.yoursitedomain.com and now we just need to make sure that the MX record points to that A Record.

Click Main MX Record

In the 10 box enter mail.yoursitedomain.com.

Important Note: Don’t forget the period at the end

Click

In a few hours, once DNS has propagated, your email will start flowing to your mail server.

As an important note, if you have any forms or scripts on your website that email from the website to an address @yoursitedomain.com you’ll need to contact us to make a quick change to allow those to send to your offsite email server instead of the local mail server.

Any time that the DNS Records are altered, it will take a few hours for those changes to be seen in the outside because of the time it takes for those changes to be propagated across the internet. Be sure that your external mail server is up and running before updating the MX record.
