Password Protecting Portions of your Site with WebPassword

The topic of this article is supported in its entirety by our customer support department.

If you have a specific area of your site contained in a folder that needs to be password protected, you can do so using the WebPassword ValueApp. For example, if you have a private area of your website, such as http://yoursitedomain.com/private/, you can password protect that directory to allow only authorized users to view the contents. This is extremely useful if you need to put company documents on the web to be downloaded by remote employees, but do not want to expose your information to anyone who may find the site.

Installing WebPassword:

Log in to your VDS Manager by clicking the ‘Login to VDS Manager’ link from the Products page of the Customer Manager, which is located at https://my.opensourcehost.com.

Click on Install & Manage

Click on the Web Applications folder at the top of the screen.

Click on the Web Password ValueApp icon.

Accept the license

Enter the following information:

  • WebPassword Name - Enter a description for this WebPassword (this simply allows you to keep your different password protected areas separated inside of the VDS Manager)
  • URL - Enter the URL which you wish to password protect including the http://
  • User Name - Enter the user name for the URL you want to protect
  • New Password - Enter the password
  • Retype Password - Re-enter the password

Click

To add multiple users, simply add multiple copies of WebPassword with the same URL and different user names and passwords.

Important Note: WebPassword will only work on the primary domain, not on any virtual hosts
Important Note: You can only password protect folders, not individual files.
