Adding Links to your Weblog Sidebar

The topic of this article is not supported by our customer support department, however for your convenience we are providing this material to assist you in troubleshooting potential issues related to this topic.

The Weblog ValueApp allows you to add links to the sidebar of the Weblog pages; this is a conveniant way to link your viewers to your favorite sites. You can manage the links that appear on the sidebar of your Weblog by using the Links tab at the top of the Weblog ValueApp administration area.

The Links section is divided into multiple sub-sections:

Manage Links
The Manage Links area allows you to organize or remove the links that appear on the sidebar of your blog. You can click the Delete button next to a link to remove it, or check multiple links and use the Manage Multiple Links options at the bottom of the page to update multiple links at a time. For example, to re-categorize some of your links, just check the box for the links in question, then use the Move to category option to move them.

Add Link
This form allows you to add a new link to the links area in your weblog pages. Simply enter the URL of the page that you are linking to, a title and description, and select a link category to add the link to. Once you click Add Link, the new link will appear immediately on the sidebar of your weblog.

When adding a new link, you can also add advanced options:

  • Link Relationship / XFN - You can add XFN tags to your links so that social network software can automatically read your links and determine what other blogs you enjoy and how their authors are related to you. Most people will leave these options alone, as they are only set for users of advanced weblog networks that require XFN data associated with their posts.
  • Image URI - You can enter the address to an image to have it appear instead of a textual link; use this if the site you are linking to provides a small graphic or button for this purpose.
  • RSS URI - If the site that you are linking to is a blog, enter the address to it’s RSS feed, and some web browsers may automatically add a link or menu item to subscribe to the feed in the default RSS reader.
  • Rating - If you wish to have your links rated or sorted, you can select a rating here.
  • Target - Use this to indicate if the link should open in a new window (_blank), or the current window (_top).
  • Visible - If you wish to add a link but not yet have it appear on your public links area of your weblog, use the Visibile option to hide the link.

Link Categories
To help keep your links organized, you can use Link Categories. From the Link Categories sub-section of the Links area in the Weblog admin, use the Add a Link Category form to add a new link category:

  • Name - Enter the name as it will appear in the sidebar as a header for the links in the category.
  • Show - Use these options to select how much information about each link is displayed in the sidebar; for example, if you do not wish for the descriptions of the links to be show, deselect it here.
  • Sort Order - This allows you to change the way that links are sorted; use “Updated” to display links in the order that they were added.
  • Limit - If you wish to limit the number of links shown at one time, enter the limit here. If you combine this with the “Updated” Sort Order, you can have only the most recent 5 links shown.
  • Toggle - Use this to only show one link at a time—each new link is the only link that will appear on the sidebar for the selected category.
  • Formatting - Use this to update the HTML that is used for dividing your links. This should be left as the default unless you have edited your themes.

Once you’ve created a link category, you can use the Edit and Delete links next to the listing near the top of the Link Categories page to update its settings.

Import Links
If you already use an RSS reading website or software, you may be able to export a list of your subscribed blogs as an OPML file. You can enter the URL or the filename of the OPML file on your computer to have all of your subscribed blogs listed in your sidebar in the category that you select.
